The second most important person in The Bottoms is Nuzio Vespucci, the moneylender. As moneylenders go, Nuzio is honest, honorable and fair. Which is to say, he refrains from breaking legs, or worse, when payments are late, but business is business. He is somewhat respected in The Bottoms, but not liked, since many have had occasion to use his services, and while he is compassionate with those who fall on hard times, he never forgets a debt. His usual tactic when someone is late, and he feels they should be able to pay, is to let everyone in the neighborhood know what’s going on. This has earned him some enmity.
