Martius Numia

Martius is the Pilus Prior, or senior centurion, of the 1st cohort of the 2nd century of the 6th legion. As such, he is the second most senior centurion in the legion. He is a 20 year veteran of the legions, serving in several over the years, and is well regarded by his men and his superiors. The Primus Pilus, the only centurion more senior to Martius, is as much administrator as officer, and is too busy for any but the most important tasks outside his usual duties. Thus, Martius is often given "special assignments" by Legate Sornia, including tasks that involve dealing with civilians.

Martius is from a merchant family, well to do, in the heartland of the Empire, but has little contact with them since he joined the legions. Many feel he may have joined to escape them. He is a hard-bitten veteran of many battles, canny and practical, who studiously avoids getting dragged into politics. (This is why Legate Sorna assigns him tasks that involve dealing with civilians, knowing he won't get enmeshed in any intrigue.)
