Shantytown Market

Just outside the Brass Gate is Shantytown, a ramshackle neighborhood that has grown up outside the wall as a result of the increased trade after the pass to Sassina reopened. Not officially part of the city, it is outside its jurisdiction, and protection. What enforcement is done is done informally by the City Watch post in The Bottoms, out of the kindness of Diego Amato's heart, and that of his men.
The heart of Shantytown is the informal market, open for business most days, weather permitting. Since it is outside the jurisdiction of the city, it is very, very much caveat emptor, but it is also untaxed, and many merchants, and farmers, hunters and trappers prefer to hawk their wares here. Most are honest, hard working folk, and those who resort to coercion often find themselves the subject of considerable hostility from the entire market - and without the protection of the Guard.
This is the place where most of the denizens of The Bottoms (and the Court of Miracles, and to a lesser degree, The Maze) come to buy farm produce, fresh meat, and the less expensive goods still worth importing from afar, such as cloth or finished leather goods. With Ennio Fabbro's smithy and Tazio the Leatherworker's leather shop just inside the Brass Gate, it is also a popular camp site for travelers of all kinds who need to rest up and have their gear seen to.
